Sketching a visitor

I sketched another visitor today. She had braided her hair into cornrows and then pulled the whole bunch into a ponytail. It was very detailed and fun to draw. She had a ring in her lower lip which was just barely visible to me from where I was sitting.

The first Sunday and the first day of the New Year were one and the same...Lots of people came to worship and the congregational singing was so uplifting. Pastor A. did a great Sermon too.
Enjoyable day--however, our Detroit Lions lost :-) Oh well, I enjoy the College games more.

Sunday after Thanksgiving and our Sanctuary is now ready for the Christmas Season! There were lots of Pointsettias and other decor that was just lovely. The worship and praise songs were "right on." I started in with my sketchbook with the Scripture read by our Worship leader and then just had to capture the Pointsettias in front of the piano. The rest were hymns we sang.

We spent a recent weekend visiting our kids in Texas and having a 60th birthday party for my husband. These notes and sketch were from our daughter's church in NW Houston.

This cross is cut into the side wall of their new building, behind the choir loft. The Texas sunshine comes through it in a magical way.

This little girl sat in front of us and I was attracted to her well-coordinated stripes, so I quickly sketched her and painted it at home.

The funny part is, I noticed she was sketching on the bulletin.

Even funnier is that the prompt at Illustration Friday this week is 'stripes'.

Friends Among our Congregation

We usually sit in the Center section of our Sanctuary on Sunday mornings....and we can always count on these friends to be somewhere nearby--usually in front of us. I am amazed by her hair and how pretty it always looks....just had to paint them! We have shared prayer requests for each other's families--always great to know someone is praying with you!

Now that we are back in Arizona it's time for my Sunday church sketching again. When we walked in church I immediately spotted this lady being so attentive. And out came my Moleskine and pen. Then I became attentive also.
I did this last Sunday but had already posted something else so my lady had to wait a week.

The only thing I drew while taking notes at church was my iPod Touch --- I am so loving this as the Bible I carry! There are multiple Bibles loaded, as well as a Bible study commentary and dictionary. Always easy to quickly compare versions of Scripture.

(The old air pump was drawn later as friends from church ate out together.)

Doodling in Church

It was a lovely Fall day, it was Communion Sunday (The Lord's Table of Remembrance) and our Music Director always reads a few verses of Scripture between some of our Worship Songs. Sunday he read from Romans 4: 7 & 8--that's when I began "doodling" and writing the Scripture in a bit of a circle (?). It was meaningful to me and it fit on the page :-)
Our trees are just starting to "turn" and acorns are dropping everywhere--we even have some Black Walnut Trees behind us, and I found a few walnuts on the ground--don't want the Winter to come too quick!!!
I'm posting this on October 3rd--it's our 58th Wedding Anniversary. We had a wonderful day together!

Drawing in Church kept me busy (while I was listening to the Sermon) trying to get it all down on Paper! The Choir and Orchestra are back for the Season and the music was so uplifting and worshipful.
Also, since it is 9-11-11, we had a time of remembrance of all that happened on that fateful day. God Bless America!

A few weeks ago my favorite 'hat lady' had a new hat in church and last Sunday she had another new hat. Must have been shopping.

She is the only one wearing a hat in church so I am 'forced' to record all her new hats. lol

I don't know why I am so fascinated with hats but they make such a wonderful subject.

This is the time of the year when our Choir is on Sabbattical--so we will have different group combinations singing some meaningful Gospel duets, trios, and quartets. Also, our congregational singing was very worshipful and it was a good time of Praise.

We had a nice patriotic Fourth of July celebration (on the 3rd) at Church. The Orchestra and Choir were great! Also had a video about our Founding Fathers and Freedom. Then Pastor Brent preached a fine message and we celebrated Communion. A great time of Remembrance.

My scanner was giving me a hard time this past week, so I'm late with my Sunday, June 25th drawing. It was an exciting report of a week of "Kidz Kamp" for all who volunteered! All kinds of activities and lessons--they totally enjoyed it! We had a Picnic for everyone after the Church Services.

Since there was so much "talk" about the Rapture--and the "end of the world" in past weeks, I thought I would post my drawing from our Women's Bible Study. Mrs. King was talking about the Rapture and we agreed no one knew "the day nor the hour" and she said she might be sitting eating Chicken Salad at the Beverly Hills Grille (across from the Cemetary) and her husband Dave would "precede" her, etc....she's next! It was quite amusing to picture this in my mind so here's my (feeble) illustration--and I enjoyed doing it!

I-Witness News: Live From Jericho

This is a Children's Musical with Good News about God's Provision and Faithfulness.
We went to our Granddaughter's Church in Rochester Hills, MI (about 25 miles from our area) to see our Great-Grandson in this wonderful play/musical. He loved his (soldier) costume and knew every word and "motion" to every song.
The Pastor gave a talk about trusting God and then the Musical.
There was a lot to take notes and sketch--so this is the best I could do.
Then we, and all our Son's family had lunch at our Granddaughter's home.

Resurrection Sunday Celebration

He is Risen, He is Risen Indeed! What a triumphant Celebration we had this morning at our Easter Service.
It is so good to be home (we've been on vacation in the Smokie Mountains and enjoyed every minute--but there's NO PLACE LIKE HOME).
The flowers, the music, and the message were so inspiring...and our afternoon spent at our Son and daughter-in-law's home with the rest of our family...God is good!

I drew this tiny bottle of water as a continuous line --- and it shows!
I typically begin at the top, work down the right side, and then up the left. Which means my hand is blocking my view of the right side as I do the left. The sides don't match!

We are vacationing in the Smokie Mountains where it's easy to "worship" in a lot of places...I Saw this sign in a store window in Gatlinburg, TN where we treated ourselves to an Ice Cream.

Also painted a few Magnolia Blossoms from a tree in full bloom in the Woods at a Scenic Pullout. The wildflowers here are gorgeous!

This vase on the altar captured my attention as soon as we walked in church. So serene looking.
So I sketched it and wrote a tanka. A tanka's syllables are 5-7-5-7-7. New kind of verse that I am trying. I like the extra 7-7 as compared to haiku which is 5-7-5 syllables.

Final Global Missions Fest for 2011

This was the last Sunday in a 2-wk. Missions Fest. The music was great--I could hardly print fast enough to get some of the words. Then the Skype call from the Chech Republic with our Missionaries there giving a report. Amazing!!!
This is part of an "EACH-REACH" program that several Churches in our area are participating in.....to reach-out to neighbors and friends with the Word of God (Gospel).
It was a full morning :-)

I've been a bit lax in posting daily sketches . . . and in actually doing daily sketches! A new puppy in the house is nearly the same as a new baby.

These were sketched from photos our breeder had sent us, sketched before church began. Some notes were added during church --- then I was on my way to Oklahoma to pick up my new puppy.

Our Global Missions Fest is always quite colorful with the different country's flags on display. I like the "reports" from the Missionaries too. This morning, Sandy had on a particularly bright outfit--that immediately had me get out my pen and pad :-) Then I decided to add Dr. Janet....... who very often sits in front of us and this a.m. I got a chance to sketch her too! We were priviliged to go out to lunch with some friends and include our SS speakers--The Getz's--they work with International Students at MSU (with the Navigator's Group). It was a great morning.....

Our "Resident Theologian" teaches our Sunday Morning Adult Bible Class--He is able to be quite colorful as he teaches...so I brought my Outline home the first Sunday and made it "colorful" and have been adding to it each Sunday with more information. I think I'm running out of space, so I may need to start a new page....?

This tiny purse-palette is filled with gouache. I keep it plus an old Bijou WC box in my purse, but I usually add color at home. It seems disrespectful to do any more than sketches in church while listening to the message / prayer requests / etc.

This is Joshua, a newcomer to our church. He's been at least once before because my sister told me she took him cookies. We have a ministry where all newcomers get homemade cookies brought to their home if they fill out the "welcome to our church" card. My sister is the one who makes and delivers the cookies so she often knows the names of all the new people. It's a friendly gesture to show people we appreciate that they stopped by. Often they aren't even home and the cookies are left in a pretty bag hanging on their front door knob.

This is what the sky looked like at 7am when we got out of the car to go into church. "Good morning" from the Lord.

We sat behind this lady and my journal words say it all, "Blessed are the frail and elderly". She looked so frail and so bundled up I just wanted to hug her.

We always have coffee and some "goodies" right before our ABF (Adult Bible Fellowship--Sunday School Class) starts. We were almost to Church for the early service and I remembered that I forgot the "crackers and cheese" I was supposed to bring. We turned around, picked up my "stuff" and hurried back, but were somewhat late and had to sit in the back (for a change).

I was able to sketch a few friends sitting in the next two rows, and even get some sermon notes. But at least the "goodies" made it on time :-)

Ours is a small, non-traditional church that started as a house-church. We don't sit in pews facing one way --- we sit in a circle. So everyone can guess that I'm sketching as I write down sermon notes.

Intimidating.

But a good reminder that the main thing is to listen and spend time with the Lord. The drawing just helps me concentrate on the message.

We were sitting behind my favorite redhead, and it just happened her brother was doing the drums right in my eyeview--so I had to get them both. Dayna had part of her hair in a Clip at the back this week--It looked real nice, as usual.
The young married couple playing violins are quite amazing too. They move right together and stroke their instruments right in sync. Their other vocation is in the Medical field.
Beside all this, I actually get much out of the Message :-)

I drew the mug and tea bag with a colored pencil this time (not erasable) --- I like how easy it is to add shading, yet it isn't affected by watercolor. And doesn't smear like pencil does as I scribble sermon notes down.

Our pastor's wife, Ginger, lost her always-present-in-cold-weather ear muffs. Not much choice left in the stores since the bitterly cold weather arrived; these came with matching gloves!

Now picture Ginger: a conservative Southern lady who mostly wears blacks and neutrals, sometimes a dark red. We all laughed when we saw her sporting her new find . . . . and she has the perfect sense of humor to carry the look off!

We were in Napa, California for church this morning. St. Mary's Episcopal Church is an artist's haven, there is so much to look at and draw. I used to find that impossible, but lately I've been trying to break down large, fussy scenes to something manageable, one line at a time, and it has become more doable.

Church Crowd

I did this sketch way back in December and never had a chance to post it until now.

Yesterday we had a tragedy in Tucson; a gunman shot 19 people of which six died including a 9-year-old girl. Apparently his target was Congress woman Gabriele Giffords. She was shot in the head but is still alive at this writing.
The gunman is in custody.
Today in church, we will be praying for all those affected including the little girl who was a member of our parish.
Such a senseless loss of life.

The bottom drawing was done a week ago, the top one was drawn this morning. I used Pitt brush pens for both in a sketchbook that was one of my Christmas gifts.

Ambassador Class Christmas Party

We had a wonderful Class Christmas Celebration at Church on December 21st. A Roast Beef Dinner with all the trimmings was just the beginning....we had some great entertainment, sang Carols, had some amusing stories, etc. I forgot to sketch until my dessert was nearly finished. The centerpieces for the tables were provided by different members--so every table was different. Very festive evening.

I sketched Lance today. He is the father of my grandniece and doesn't come to church much. His daughter was in the Christmas program today so he came and sat in the row in front of me. He has very distinctive bone structure...I found it fascinating to watch him and look at him closely.

I've gotten busy with pre-Christmas activities and forgot to post my doodles from our weekly prayer meeting. Last one this year; we'll start again in January.

These weekly prayer meetings are held in the pastor's home so they are not technically "Sketching in Church" --- but I've chosen to use the broader term. The real "church" being the body of believers all over the world, no matter where we meet together.

I've posted our choir before--but the Church is all decorated for Christmas, the choir had their red sashes on--the Music was so uplifting and worshipful with Orchestra, Pipe Organ, and the Christmas message--so here I am drawing/posting them again. Enjoyable morning--then out to lunch with good friends.

I added the color at home.

The Christmas decor is up, the music is interspersed with Christmas music--and I've already posted our choir (?) --so this Sunday I caught a few of the Violinists from the Orchestra. They join the Choir twice a month. Also got a few of the pointsettias and one of the Christmas Trees.

Everything just draws you into Worship.

This is a repeat from last Sunday but I was sitting in a different pew so my perspective was different. Now I'm wondering if I should just make it a habit -- draw the same thing week after week but always switching pews. Usually we have "assigned" seating....

Isn't it amazing that all the sketching I do in church and this pastor picks one of my pieces to use on their bulletin?! Must be poetic justice!

I didn't feel like carrying a purse yesterday . . . just grabbed the church's money bag, my iPod Bible, and sketchbook, plus a red pencil. Added color later at home.

(As church treasurer, I'm in charge of the offerings and checkbook. The bag is getting to look worn out.)

We were sitting in church and I had just started sketching when this lady walked in and sat down in front of us. My husband looked at me and I looked at him, we both knew she needed to be sketched, and I went right to the next page in my sketchbook.

Does he know me or what!

She was so interesting. What you can't see are the gray mid-calf pants, blue ankle socks and gray tennis shoes.

Very fun to sketch and then paint at home.

This past Sunday, a young lady sat right in front of us...She had wavy (natural color) Auburn-Red hair--and it reaches her waist. I had to put her in my notes because I couldn't take my eyes off the hair anyway :-) Her brother is sitting on her left, with the green "hoodie." Another brother who has the same red hair (only short-cut) assists the Drum/Cymbal man (his teacher) on the Sundays when our Orchestra plays. This is a very nice family.

With a simple Pilot ink pen and a touch of white gel pen, I have finished this Moleskine sketchbook today. Yeah! Now on to better paper . . .

Don't understand my need to finish each sketchbook even if I don't like the paper; maybe it's because there have been so many projects in the past that were begun and never finished?

Technically, this drawing was done AFTER church while waiting to be served at the re-opened restaurant. But the notes were during church so maybe it still counts?

Just some mindless sketching during church . . .

After church, we went out to eat with friends. I saw a Native American gentleman who had a very interesting face and was tempted to sketch him. But instead, I joined in the conversation at our table without sketching.

Later, I wish I had pulled out my sketchbook . . . . from overheard conversation, we discovered that this Navajo man had served as one of the Marine's Windtalkers in World War II. Fascinating story!
